Felicia Brooks, a 48 year old resident of Eddington, Maine, received her sentence for disability benefits fraud earlier this week. The disability checks she had been receiving were intended for her developmentally disabled daughter. Brooks began receiving the checks in 1998, when she and her husband divorced and she was given custody of their daughter. She subsequently lost custody in 2000, but Brooks continued receiving the checks due to the state’s error, and continued to spend them.
Her attorney asked that she not be given jail time, citing mental health problems. Nonetheless, Brooks has been sentenced to one month in prison, followed by six months of house arrest and three years of government supervision. She will also have to repay the amount of money taken from the government: a total of $45,551.
